Thailand's deep south: 1 militant killed, 1 surrenders
Bangkok post, December 19, 2011

A suspected militant was killed and another surrendered to a government force which raided a house in tambon Lalo in Narathiwat's Ruso district early on Monday morning.

The raid was carried out by a 30-strong combined police and military force following a tip-off that two houses in tambon Lalo were the hideouts of a number of RKK insurgents.

The unit first surrounded a house at Buke Nano village. When the authorities told them to surrender, the militants opened fire and an exchange of fire ensued for about 10 minutes, officials said.

One militant, identified as Abdulromae Hare, 31, surrendered to the authorities while the others managed to flee through the cordon of the police and soldiers.

One militant was found dead in a subsequent search of the house and an AK47 rifle was found with his body. He was identified as Ruslan Maneng, 30.

Abdulromae, who surrendered, is wanted under a court warrant for taking part in a raid on a military outpost in tambon Marubotok in Narathiwat's Rangae district and the theft of a number of weapons on Jan 19.

He was taken to Narathiwat Task Force 30 headquarters at Wat Suantham in Ruso district for questioning.

In a search of the second house at Phong Yuchi village, the government force found that the militants had fled, officials said.
