A total of 352 flood victims have filed a petition with the Central Administrative Court asking it to order the government to compensate them in full to meet with actual damage caused to their property.
The flood victims are led by Srisuwan Janya, chairman of the Stop Global Warming Association.
Named in the lawsuit are Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Justice Minister Pracha Promnok, the chairman of the Flood Relief Operations Command, Agriculture Minister Theera Wongsamut, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, and officials of 11 agencies.
The plaintiffs ask the Central Administrative Court to hold the prime minister and others named in the petition responsible for damages as a result of mistakes, ignorance, failure and recklessness on the part of authorities concerned in the flood relief operations and to order them to pay full compensation for the actual damage.
The court is also asked to order those named in the petition to mete out concrete measures to convince the people that the government would be able to cope with this kind of disaster should it happen again in the future and that the people would be allowed to participate in relief operations.
They also want the government to set aside a fund of at least 2 billion baht per year, increased in line with annual inflation, as a fund for the welfare and rehabilitation of flood victims, and allow the people to take part in the management of the fund.
