Indonesian Govt questions RIM move to build ‘server’ in Singapore

The Communications and Information Ministry has questioned Blackberry manufacturer Research In Motion’s (RIM) latest move to choose Singapore as its infrastructure location instead of Indonesia.

“We are disappointed with RIM’s decision to build its router in Singapore because so far Indonesia remains its biggest market in the region. We need them to place their server here as it would smooth the connection and at the end of the day bring benefits to its Indonesian customers,” Iwan Krisnadi, regulation commission chief at the Indonesia Telecommunication Regulation Body (BRTI), said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.

According to the ministry’s data up until the end of 2010, Indonesia was home to 2.6 million Blackberry customers. It is expected to reach at least 4 million customers by the end of this year.

The ministry spokesman Gatot Dewabroto said that RIM should consider building its server here for the sake of its own customers. However, he refused to criticize RIM over this as he acknowledged that in the early-stage agreement there was no obligation for RIM to build its infrastructure in Indonesia.
