KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An official says former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is in southern Nepal visiting the area where Buddha was born.
Thaksin worshipped at Buddhist temples in Lumbini on Saturday.
The former Thai leader was overthrown in a 2006 military coup and lives in self-imposed exile after being convicted of corruption-related charges. Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is now Thailand’s prime minister after a Thaksin-allied party won elections early this year.
Police official Dharmaraj Bhandari says Thaksin arrived in Nepal on Friday on a chartered aircraft from Burma and immediately flew to Lumbini for his pilgrimage.
