HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The Catholic church in Vietnam says a priest has been beaten unconscious by a mob of “thugs” and the house he intended to turn into an orphanage has been destroyed.

The Office of the Hanoi Archdiocese said in a statement posted on its website that the Rev. Nguyen Van Binh had bought land in Chuong My District outside Hanoi. He built a house there that he intended to turn into an orphanage.

It said Binh visited the house last weekend and found it had been destroyed. It said he was then attacked and knocked unconscious by a group of men at the site.

The incident has added to the uneasy relations between the government and church, which has been calling for the government to return church land confiscated decades ago.
