NEW DELHI (AP) — Maoist rebels have released an Italian tourist guide abducted more than a month ago from a remote forest area of eastern India.

Paulo Basusco was released unharmed Thursday after the government of Orissa state agreed to release five Maoist rebels from prison.

Basusco along with an Italian tourist Claudio Colangelo was abducted on March 14 while on a trek through a densely forested area.

Colangelo was released 11 days later, but Basusco remained in captivity while negotiations took place between the rebels and the government.

The rebels are inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong and have been fighting in several Indian states for more than four decades demanding land and jobs for farmers and the poor.
