Thaksin's Passport dispute goes to Ombudsman

Thaksin's Passport dispute goes to Ombudsman
Bangkok Post, January 5, 2012

New Politics Party leader Somsak Kosaisuk on Thursday filed a petition with the Office of the Ombudsman asking it to investigate if Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul and other officials broke the law by issuing a passport for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The petition was submitted to Prawit Rattanapien, the chief ombudsman.

Mr Somsak said this matter had become controversial and should not be left unsettled.
He said according to item 21 (2) of the 2005 regulations of the Foreign Ministry concerning the issue of passports, authorities can refuse to issue a passport on being informed that the applicant is subject to legal punishment or has been temporarily released, or wanted under a warrant in a criminal case.

Mr Prawit accepted the petition for further investigation.

If the law was found to have been breached, the case would be forwarded to the Administrative Court, he said.
