DAVAO, Philippines—The Philippine military says communist guerrillas have resumed attacks after a self-imposed Christmas ceasefire.
Regional military spokesman Col. Leopoldo Galon says about 50 New People's Army guerrillas assaulted a government militia outpost guarding a village in Agusan del Norte province on Tuesday, killing a militiaman and two rebels. A week-long rebel ceasefire ended on Monday.
Army Sgt Sixto Duyan says he and 16 militiamen battled an overwhelming number of Maoist rebels, who were armed with explosives and assault rifles, for more than four hours. The rebels later retreated, dragging away one of their dead.
The rebels, who have been fighting for a Marxist state since 1969, are listed by Washington as terrorists.
