WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has renewed a U.S. import ban against Burma for another year.

But Republican minority leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, said Thursday he was encouraged by Burma’s progress in the past year-and-a-half. He said lawmakers would monitor developments there “with hope for the future.”

McConnell is an influential voice on Burma policy. He said the import ban contains a waiver provision that could be exercised down the road.

President Barack Obama last month waived sanctions banning U.S. investment in Burma, the biggest step yet to reward democratic reforms.

McConnell said he remained concerned by ethnic violence and political prisoners in Burma and arms sales with North Korea.

Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley said the U.S. needed to press for further progress by keeping the 2003 sanctions law on the books.
